Dear Friends of Garden City,
Annual Gathering on the Garden City Lands
Thanks to all who attended our Annual Gathering, including those who couldn’t make it this year, but were definitely there with us in spirit!
MLA Henry Yao presented our society with a Certificate of Appreciation for the Garden City Conservation Society’s (GCCS) help in establishing the Miyawaki Forest at Garden City Park and for introducing the concept of the Miyawaki Forest to Richmond. Thank you to MLA Yao for initiating this project and the City of Richmond for making it happen!
A special thank you to Linda Li who made a generous donation towards the purchase of plants for the Garden City Park Miyawaki Forest. We were happy to thank Linda in person at our meeting!
Jim Wright’s Garden City Lands article in the Richmond News
Jim Wright, past president of the GCCS, shown in the photo above with his able assistant, Kojak. If we could add a soundbite, for sure, Kojak would be saying “Woof”! As if to confirm his importance in any and all work being done in this home! Thanks for your help, Kojak, with Jim’s article which is a definite must-read for anyone who appreciates our beloved Garden City Lands and KPU’s wonderful work there!
Beggerticks and Beetles
Our plan to do a Natural Dye Workshop (original date July 27; changed to August 24) has been scuttled by some hungry beetles. They evidently decided the Beggarticks (the flower we were going to clip and make dye from) were especially delicious this year. There will not be enough flowers to make dye from!
Dr. Mike Bomford
Plan B:
Instead, we will hold another invasive clipping on the GCL, in an area where we hope the sphagnum moss can flourish. Thank you, Richmond Bahai youth group, who have already signed on to help us!
All are welcome to join us Saturday, August 24, from 11a.m. to 1p.m. We’ll meet at the dome on the GCL Lands and head out from there. The work session will include a tour of the native species of our bog led by KPU’s Dr Mike Bomford!
Eyes and ears to the ground
GCCS Director Sabine Eiche wrote an amazing article in the Richmond News recently. She describes a whole other world that exists all around us. But we have to keep our Eyes and ears to the ground to witness it. Seeing though the eyes of a child?
Sabine at 1 1/2 years, standing quite close to the ground, on an ancient beech tree stump.
Have a wonderful summer everyone!
